The Manteo area leases which were the subject of the previous Mobil leasing controversy off NC's coast included an area known locally as "The Point" and considered important to offshore fishing here. That's certainly not the only sensitive area subject to impact from drilling or spills here, but it's the example I had immediately in mind. There are any number of easy starting-point references for this item: www.geology.enr.state.nc.us/1998.htm is one. Run a Google search on "The Point" and North Carolina offshore drilling for others.

Danbesse, please point me to where you are talking about, because in my independent research, the Manteo Exploration is not in the middle of the fisheries. I would like to know where you are getting your information, because maybe i overlooked something. Thanks

Dear Stenographer / Blogger,
This here, "would generate nearly 1.5 billion barrels of oil as part of an overall plan for energy independence" is a verifiable statement. Is it true? Is he exaggerating? Your readers would like to know.

Also, context is key. 1.5 billion over how many years? How does that compare to current US consumption?

Basically, this post is just a Xerox of a McCrory press release, that does nothing to leave your readers better informed. Please work just a bit harder at informing your readers, and you'll set yourself apart from your peers and you'll be successful.

Pat's glaring lack of familiarity with the facts of this issue is showing. One of the principal areas which has been proposed for exploratory drilling off the North Carolina coast is in a zone especially important to fisheries resources. He is declaring his willingness to jeopardize our fisheries and tourism industries for the prospect of an additional trickle in petroleum supplies, decades from today. That is poll-driven politics, not responsible leadership.

I don't know about the amount of oil available, that could be in question.

However, his "argument" that drilling 45 miles off the coastline would not be visible from shore is not an "argument", it is a fact. One wouldn't want to "argue" with what is proven by the physics involved.

That would overturn a previous executive order issued by Gov. Jim Hunt.

"Too many of our elected officials simply reject the possibility of offshore drilling with scare tactics," he said, according to a statement issued by his campaign, singling out rival Beverly Perdue, who has said she is "100 percent opposed."

He argued that "deep-sea drilling" 45 miles off the coastline wouldnot be visible from the coast and would generate nearly 1.5 billion barrels of oil as part of an overall plan for energy independence.

"Tourism will not be affected and jobs would be in areas where they are most needed," he said.

He also said he would petition the federal government so the state receives a 37.5 percent share.

Previously: McCrory undecided on offshore drilling.
