My name is James Protzman. I'm a freelance writer who has lived in Chapel Hill since 1977, when I left the Navy at Camp Lejeune. I graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1972 and the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication in 1980. I'm working on two novels, which I tuck in between my writing and blogging.

Just in case you're math- and reading-challenged, that means I've lived in North Carolina more than 30 years, and served as an officer in the Navy, working with the Marine Corps.

So who the heck are you?

Oh for heaven's sake, FCC. Would you settle down? Every post from you inspires the picture of an angry wet hen. You're going to blow a gasket, burst a blood vessel, rupture a tendon, have an apoplectic fit and keel over. Now I'm sure there's someone out there in this big ole world who cares about ole FCC and doesn't want him injuring his crazy old self. Don't make us find your loved ones and have you consigned to an asylum for your own danged good.

In response to the outcry raised by Enron and other scandals, Congress passed the Corporate Corruption Bill, which President Bush signed on July 30, 2002, amid great fanfare. Bush declared that he was signing the bill because of his strong belief that corporate officers must be straightforward and honest. If they were not, he said, they would be held accountable.
Ironically, the day Bush signed the Corporate Corruption Bill, he and his aides were enmeshed in an orchestrated campaign to trick the country into taking the biggest risk imaginable--a war. Indeed, plans to attack Iraq were already in motion.

To Mismanagement

OPEC, rebuffing calls from U.S. President George W. Bush to increase oil output, cited "mismanagement" of the American economy as a major factor driving prices up.
Record prices are suddenly creating the sharpest tensions in years between the oil cartel and the United States, the world's largest oil consumer. Two days after the president called for more oil on the global market, OPEC members, meeting in Vienna, Austria, chose to leave their production levels unchanged, declaring that the market has plenty of oil already.

That has EVERYTHING to do with what's going on at the national level!

Oh, taxes....NC has 3rd lowest business taxes in U.S. as of May 2, 2008 when Ernst & Young and the Council on State Taxation released their study.

I've never known any left-over hippie in Chapel Hill to turn down a buffet with lots of former draft dodgers regaling the crowd.

Granted, Perdue has always been sycophantic to Basnight, but Hillary? Sycophantic? Naaaaaah.

And as for old, I don't know that that's the first thing I think of when I look at either one of them. They seem pretty spry, actually.

But I'm sure Perdue will be anxious for any photo ops she can get with Obama. Will McCrory be so anxious for photo ops with Bush? Kinda doubtful, isn't it?

I'll freely admit that I'm easily impressed, and I can be entertained for hours watching two kittens playfight with each other. But the last time I went to the Protzman home for a casual get-together a little over a month ago, there were so many candidates there I didn't even attempt to count them. As far as a Bush visit is concerned, North Carolina Republicans should be horrified that an Executive who presided over our national debt burden surpassing nine trillion dollars, and had to scramble to find his damn Veto stamp that he hadn't used at all for six years, is coming here to lend his advice and support to the GOP candidate for Governor. They should at least buy Pat a haz-mat suit so he won't get infected by poor judgment and fiscal irresponsibilty.

Bush coming to Raleigh for McCrory

President Bush will be coming to Raleigh next month to raise money for GOP gubernatorial candidate Pat McCrory and the state Republican Party.

Bush is scheduled to attend a high-dollar fundraiser on July 20 at the home of John Kane, the chairman of Kane Realty Corp., who is redeveloping the North Hills area, Rob Christensen reports.

"The president will be coming in for a fundraising event," confirmed Jack Hawke, McCrory’s chief consultant. "There are still a lot of people in North Carolina that are wiling to take part in a fundraising event where the president is a guest of honor. We expect to do very well."

With the president's ratings so low, having Bush come in for a campaign event carries political risks. McCrory, the Charlotte mayor, is facing Democratic Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue in the governor's race.

But Hawke said national issues will have little impact on the governor's race.
