As happy as I am that Mike Easley won't be secretary of education in the nonexistent Clinton cabinet, he did at least have the courage to speak out once he thought there was something in it for him, even though the nomination was already not likely. If he could have reclaimed a popularity ranking above the teens and delivered the state for her, he would have deserved a cabinet post.

I don't know whether Brad Miller is after any such reward, or maybe he's just playing it safe on behalf of the state in order not to alienate either of the candidates. But really, who cares about an endorsement once the nomination is clinched? I wish you had endorsed before our primary, Mr. Miller, but I do hope you will go ahead and do it now.

In the meantime, I am celebrating this as a defeat for Easley and the usual suspects seeking to run things here (Hendrickson et al), and counting the days to what I hope will be real change in a new administration in Raleigh.

U.S. Rep. Brad Miller's wife, Esther Hall, did not tell him she would be sitting in a prime location directly behind Barack Obama at Reynolds Coliseum tonight.

"I did not know she was going to be there," Miller said in an interview from Washington. "Anybody who knows her and knows me knows it would be very foolish for me to tell her what to do."

Miller, a Raleigh Democrat, hasn't made an endorsement yet in the presidential race, Barb Barrett reports. He represents a Congressional district that includes some rural areas — the kind that are leaning toward Hillary Clinton — and may be hedging his bets.

In any case, Miller wasn't ready to endorse late Tuesday either — even though Obama won the popular vote in North Carolina.

"I'll probably announce a decision before too much longer," Miller said.

And he hinted that he might wait to see whether the race shakes itself out without his endorsement.

"This may not come down to the superdelegates after all," Miller said.

Still, the avid basketball fan had to admire his wife's good seat tonight. "That was premium real estate," he said.
