North Carolina sat on the sidelines Tuesday.

The last time the state mattered in choosing a presidential nominee was March 9, 1988, when it was one of a group of Southern states that held a regional primary on the first Super Tuesday.

On that day, George H.W. Bush defeated Bob Dole, Pat Robertson and Jack Kemp, while Al Gore beat Jesse Jackson, Michael Dukakis and Dick Gephardt.

Since then, North Carolina has been irrelevant in the primary and nearly so in the general election.

Still, by not moving its primary up, North Carolina got a bonus of 25 percent more delegates from the Democratic Party. If the race is not decided by May 6, it could be a player. (N&O)
