The debate yesterday between two Democratic gubernatorial candidates was heated.

Beverly Perdue criticized Richard Moore for his role on a state panel that approved the troubled Randy Parton Theatre in Roanoke Rapids. Moore said that was "typical of someone who has led the go-along get-along club in Raleigh for 20 years."

Moore also criticized Perdue for raising tuition while in the legislature, while Perdue attacked him for taking campaign donations from Wall Street investment firms.

At the Republican debate, Fred Smith said the state needs to enforce immigration laws more strictly, while Bob Orr said it needs to encourage innovation rather than use incentives to lure business.

"We paid hundreds of millions (of dollars) to bring Google to North Carolina for 200 jobs and a server farm," Orr said. "We want North Carolina to be the place where the next Google starts and grows."

Bill Graham said he wants to bring transparency to state government by installing web cameras in the House and Senate so that people can follow the budget process from home. (AP)
