OK, we're in a drought. A big one.

And the governor says conserve. And we've done all the usual things. What next?

Dome thinks state and local leaders need to get a lot more creative in encouraging conservation, so we'll start the ball rolling.

Here's our first idea: Sponsor a competition.

Two of Dome's coworkers have been competing for most of the past year to see who can lose the most weight. They do monthly weigh-ins and the loser pays.

So, how about a conservation competition? You or your company's Human Resources department could sponsor a contest to see which household can reduce its water use by the largest percentage in January, as measured by the monthly water bills.

The prize? Loser pays the winner's bill.
