Would you be kind enough to enlighten us as to what words you and the New and Observer consider unacceptable speech?

A guide on how the newspaper limits its and its readers speech would be helpful.

OK, the blog is only a week old and we've already had two swear words. I am trying to keep commenting as open as possible, but it will be hard to defend if you abuse the privilege. Please confine swearing to your own blogs. — RTB

Why don't we simply all line up on each side of the Mississippi River .... Conservatives on one side .... Liberals on the other. Everybody is given a bowie knife and a baseball bat.

The Pope blows a whistle .... we all jump in and try to get to the other side. Whichever side gets the most across WINS! No Rules .... just swim and survive.

It would save a lot of nasty name calling and pissin' contests.

Next Thursday OK with everybody?

Rudy'll say anything to suck up to the reactionaries on the Republican fringe - and they'll hold their noses and swallow their pride and claim he's a "true conservative" just like Ronny Reagan. Funny and sad.

I read your story on the regular website . . . what the heck does this mean?

Before an audience of about 450, Giuliani, a Republican candidate for president, attacked recent efforts by Democrats to set a deadline to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq. He said he could not recall when "a retreating army" was "forced to print out an exact schedule" on its retreat.

Is Rudolph saying the US Army is in retreat? Sure sounds like it to me. Unless you got the quote wrong, Giuliani has just joined Harry Reid in declaring that the US has lost Bush's war in Iraq.

And what about this?

Giuliani was introduced to the crowd by conservative donor Art Pope, a former state legislator. Pope noted that Giuliani has a record beyond City Hall as a U.S. attorney who prosecuted organized crime.

Too bad Pope forgot to mention another little aspect of Rudy's record: a long-standing business relationship with a known crook.

Shameful all around.

If there are any true conservatives left in North Carolina, you can be sure they aren't in attendance at the Civitas circus this weekend.

Hey Rudy, explain why American health care costs much more per capita with poorer results than in those nations that provide universal coverage.

And nobody has ever said free. Employing those stupid scare tactics on every subject now, eh Rudy?

Here's a roundup of quotes from former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani at a Raleigh luncheon today.

On a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq: "When in the history of war has a nation that decides to retreat printed up a schedule of that retreat and handed it to its enemies?"

On universal health care: "Just wait when they make health care for free, then you'll see how expensive it becomes. ... Boy they're moving toward socialized medicine so fast, it can make your head spin."

On the Virginia Tech shootings: "There's no question that this was not a situation in which you need more laws. The laws were there. It was just a matter of their not being enforced properly."

On his stances on social issues: "Ronald Reagan had a great quote about this ... My 80 percent friend is not my 20 percent enemy."
