I'm not quite sure what that sentence is supposed to mean, but I wanted to hone in on the "don't pay taxes" part. Illegal immigrants pay taxes. It's pretty hard to buy anything in this state without getting hit with a sales tax. Additionally, illegal immigrants pay Social Security and Medicare taxes. This 2005 NY Times article (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/05/business/05immigration.html) estimates annual contributions at $7 billion per year. And illegal immigrants will never collect Social Security or Medicare unless they become citizens, so this is a pure subsidy to the American taxpayer.

The United States has already made it seem like its ok to serve the illegal immigrants with education in K-12 schooling. So if it’s ok to do that then why not community college? If we were in a situation where only classes (not full school) were offered to those who had applied for citizenship, which is the way it should be, then I would say that community college is a right they should not have until they gain citizenship. Take away the privilege of K-12 schooling and maybe the USA would seem more like they were doing something about the situation. I am not saying that offering them community college is the right thing to do; it is just the situation that the United States government has put them selves in by allowing ILLEGAL immigrants into schools in general. If the United States is going on the path to take away education entirely from the reach of illegal immigrants, then I say we should not even discuss allowing them to go to community colleges, but if we are going to let things stay the way they are with all these things offered to them, then hey, go ahead and give it to them, we are just hurting ourselves. Basically to sum up what I am saying, stick to your actions. If you want illegals to stay here illegally, then give them things.

All people without US passports or citizenship certificates shall not be eligible to attend any community college.

Anyone suspected of any Federal crime shall not be eligible to attend any community college.

Anyone suspected of any felony crime shall not be eligible to attend any community college.

We don't need to deal with that tiresome "innocent until proven guilty" claptrap. Heck we've just about done away with habeas corpus and search warrants. What's left?

This is not true. Illegal immigrants pay tuition that is equal to approximately 140% of their cost of attendance. So these students are actually subsidizing attendance for NC residents.

Allowing illegal immigrants to attend our community colleges, is unlawful due to the known fact that they are illegal. Although, Lancaster made some good points on his decision, we still have to face the fact that they are illegal and its our tax money paying for them to attend the community college. Even with the prices raised, these immigrants are still illegal and they are not "supposed to be here". I agree that illegal immigrants are an essential part of our workforce in NC and the country, but there have been no problems so far that we can contribute to the lack of education these immigrants might have. I'm sure these illegal immigrants are only here to make their lives better, and I see no problem with that, except for the fact that we have proper ways to become a naturalized citizen already set in place, that these immigrants bypass in the first place.

Illegal criminal Aliens should not be afforded anything in this country. Systematic deportation of the aliens and heavy fines and jail terms for the traitors that hire them is the justice the tax payers deserve.

I'm gratified that men like Lancaster and Easley spoke as they did, and only wish that a Democrat who is currently running for office would echo Huckabee's remarks on the subject. I suppose that's unrealistic.

Hey, does anyone else suspect that Ryan mentioned Gearino's comments on community colleges to drive traffic to Dan's blog?

I think that Lancaster's decision to allow illegal immigrants into community colleges is a good idea. It seems that he has considered all of the costs, and has chosen very practically. This will, first of all, put a good deal of money back into the state. With every illegal going to community college earning the system just over $2000, this could be a good way to help pay for state projects, and possibly lower a few taxes. It may also give illegal immigrants incentive to go through the naturalization process, since they will need to pay for college and legal immigrants make more money. Also, even if we don't want to admit it, illegals do work in this state, so it would be beneficial to us to educate them so that they can do better work and possibly help our state's economy grow.

The thing is, the answer is in the question. Should illegal immigrants be allowed in our community colleges? No, the keyword illegal says that the immigrants should not be here thus the word illegal. They are committing a federal crime and should not be given the right to be in our community colleges. And besides since they are illegal the immigrants can not legally hold a job. So, it all comes back to them being illegal. If they don't pay taxes, making legal citizens pay for the illegals, and they can't legally hold a job then they should not be allowed to be here then stop encouraging illegals to come! Illegal means that they should not be here, end of story!
