Will N&O cartoonist and native Arkansan Dwane Powell show up to play "The Arkansas Traveler" on his guitar? Former President Clinton may not have room for his saxophone on this trip.

Perhaps another Arkansas native, former N&O editorial writer and Raleigh mayoral candidate Barlow Herget, will be considered for moderator of the event. But wait, we'd better use another term besides "moderator" or folks might think the event is for that "raging moderate" Al Gore.

It's not too late for the Democrats to bring back their winning Clinton-Gore ticket from 1992 and 1996 only this time make it Gore-Clinton with the Clinton being Hillary. Of course, the Clintons are naturally interested in getting back to the No. 1 spot on the ticket.

Looks like fans of Tennessee Al will have to wait "Gore More Years" before he decides to enter another presidential campaign. This political two-step is probably a lot harder than dancing to The Tennessee Waltz. Meanwhile, Bill Clinton's scheduled appearance will remind Democratic Party activitists that in North Carolina at least, Clinton may have to play the role of Sampson because he'll probably turn this rally into some sort of "hollerin' contest" for Democratic bragging rights.

Clinton coming to Raleigh

Former President Bill Clinton will attend a Raleigh fundraiser next month on behalf of his spouse, Sen. Hillary Clinton.

Clinton will attend an event on Dec. 13 at the Brier Creek Country Club. The cost is $1,000 per person or $2,300 for a smaller reception that includes a photograph with the ex president.

"We are expecting a big group," said former Ambassador Jeanette Hyde, who is helping organize the event. "There is alot of enthusiasm."

Other old Clinton hands involved in putting together the event include former state Sen. Tom Taft of Greenville, and former state party chairman Tom Hendrickson of Raleigh. Richard Sullivan, a Clinton fundraiser who lives in Raleigh, has also been involved.

Correction: An earlier version of this post said Hillary Clinton would be coming to town.
