Two Democratic candidates for lieutenant governor criticized each other Monday.

Hampton Dellinger, a Durham attorney, said on his Web site that state Sen. Walter Dalton of Rutherfordton's voting record and candidate questionnaires showed he was not in the party's "mainstream" on abortion and the death penalty.

Dalton said that the votes were on earlier drafts and that he "stood firm" to get better versions. He defended one questionnaire answer on affirmative action.

The tussle shows that Dalton's lengthy record in office will likely be used against him by Dellinger, who has not held elected office.

Winston-Salem Councilman Dan Besse and Canton Mayor Pat Smathers are also running for the Democratic nomination, but are behind in money and organization. (Char-O)
