Another possibility is former Jim Hunt protege Jim Phillips of Greensboro, son of retired State Senator Jim W. Phillips Sr., of Lexington. Phillips is a former student body president at Chapel Hill, a member of the UNC Board of Trustees and Board of Governors - now serving a term as chairman of the Board of Governors. Phillips graduated from UNC-CH in 1979 with a history degree and earned a law degree from Wake Forest. He is a partner in the law firm of Brooks, Pierce, McLendon, Humphrey & Leonard.

A third state lawmaker may be a candidate if U.S. Rep. Brad Miller runs for the Senate.

Rep. Grier Martin, a two-term Raleigh Democrat, said he has been talking to people about whether he should pursue the 13th District seat Miller holds, Dan Kane reports.

Martin said it would allow him to take on foreign policy issues that aren't a part of a state representative's job. He is an attorney and an Army reservist who served six and a half months in Afghanistan.

"I want to be involved in that debate and I do believe that the president has taken us in the wrong direction," Martin said. "I do believe my background would aid us in correcting that."

As a bonus, he also lives in the 13th District, which stretches from Greensboro to Raleigh.

State Sens. Janet Cowell and Kay Hagan have not ruled out running for the seat either.
