Mine's in Rhetoric. Make of that what you will.

(And I know you will...)

I thought my degree was in naval engineering from the US Naval Academy, but as I studied it this morning, it's actually a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in engineering.

I feel so ashamed too.

Let me make a confession--

For many years, I've been saying my (barely-earned) bachelors degree is in "political science." Upon closer examination, it appears it is actually in "government."

I feel so ashamed.

At least I'm now in the august company of the Lt. Governor. It appears she has referred to her degree in educational "administration" when it was really in educational "leadership". For shame, Bev... for shame.

To make matters worse, she claims to have done graduate work dealing with gerontology when it was ACTUALLY dealing with, well, gerontology.

The discrepancy is so obvious. Thanks, N&O, for covering the important issues!

Okay. I bet one "Under the Dome" and you raise me with a "McClatchy." Sounds about right.

But since you pointed it out, how many other stories did McClatchy write yesterday that didn't make it Under the Dome? Is there a direct pipeline from the pages of the Charlotte Observer to the Dome - a pipeline that is not mediated by a human life form?

You chose to post it. Take the credit.

Re: Perdue's resume scrutiny

I have only checked the first name on your list, but here is what came up:

"Under this new law, Governor Gray Davis appointed Quincy T. Troupe as California's first official Poet Laureate on June 11, 2002. The Senate would have to confirm the appointment.

During a background check, however, the new Poet Laureate's position began to unravel. It was found that he had never earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Grambling College as he had claimed for 26 years. On October 18, 2002, Governor Gray Davis accepted the resignation of Quincy T. Troupe as California Poet Laureate."

There's a pretty big difference between claiming to have a B. A. degree that one never had at all, and trying to describe the special and limited field of a Ph. D. that one does have from a reputable state university. All Ms. Perdue has to do is to settle on the terminology used by the University of Florida for her perfectly legitimate doctorate.

EDIT: Here is your next reference. Not much comparison here either:

"O'Leary claimed to have a master's degree in education and to have played college football for three years, but checks into his background showed it wasn't true.

'Due to a selfish and thoughtless act many years ago, I have personally embarrassed Notre Dame, its alumni and fans,' O'Leary said in a statement released Friday by the university.

A biography released by Notre Dame on Sunday when it announced his hiring said O'Leary received a master's degree from New York University in 1972. O'Leary was a student there but did not receive a degree, said John Beckman, assistant vice president for public affairs at NYU.

O'Leary, 55, also never earned a letter playing football at New Hampshire even though his biography says he earned three. In fact, the school said he never played in a game.

Please, Angilico, you cry like a Republican about the press. Similar resume' "mistakes" or exaggerations, dependent upon your point of view, have caused numerous folks to lose their jobs over the years.

A short list that comes to mind:

Quincy Troupe - California Poet Laureate
George O'leary - Norte Dame Football Coach
Jeffrey Papows - CEO of Lotus
Joseph Ellis - Pulitzer Prize winner
Tim Johnson - Toronto Blue Jays Manager

I agree that most of Rieff's stuff has been pretty petty to date. This gets to a more fundamental flaw in Perdue's character. You can't just go around telling people you've done things that you haven't.

I wonder if the other candidate ought not to have their resumes thoroughly vetted by the press.

Um, this story was in the Charlotte Observer.

So, to be more accurate, your complaint would need to be directed at McClatchy in general.

You are correct Anglico. What has happened to the N&O that was fair in its coverage and did real investigation on stories not just copy the press releases of the republican (War Criminals)party?

Answer to margin pressure

It's all coming clear. In order to sustain its profit margins, the N&O is subleasing its political reporters to be publicists on campaign staffs. Between "Under the Beckwith" working for Moore and Rob Christensen carrying water for Dole, it's no wonder you guys have no time for real reporting.
