Fair point about the use of the word "voters." I've changed the one previous reference from voters to "those surveyed." We did note that the poll was of "residents."

But there is nothing misleading about the headline - that is what the Elon poll shows. And we have reported on the other polls when they were released.

Please do not refer to these respondents as "voters." They are not.

They are random phone numbers dialed who answered some questions.

In no way were they qualified as: registered voters AND voters likely to vote in the primary.

And your headline is completely misleading and neglects the polling that PPP and Civitas have done for the past 9 months on these races.

When Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue formally announces her candidacy for governor Monday in New Bern, she will do so as the slight leader in the Democratic primary.

A new Elon University Poll found Perdue leading with 35 percent over state Treasurer Richard Moore with 27 percent, reports Rob Christensen.

The Republican gubernatorial primary is a complete toss-up, with most of those surveyed undecided.

Salisbury attorney Bill Graham had 11. 8 percent, former NC Supreme Court Justice Bob Orr had 10.9 percent, and state Sen. Fred Smith of Clayton had 10.6 percent.

The poll of 664 North Carolina residents taken Sept. 24-27 had a margin of error of plus or minus 6.6 percent for the Democrats and plus or minus 6.9 percent for the Republicans.
