Oh, well thanks for the kind words and for pointing out that you have to be registered! Didn't realize that when I posted. But for those of you who aren't registered for HCW, it's worth it to do...

Hi, Sue. That post you linked to was a good one, but I want to point out that you have to be registered on hotcouponworld.com to read it. Registering was easy, though, and I'm sure it might be an interesting site.

Along the lines of your "talk to the cashier" tip, customers should be prepared for the barcode to fail on the occasional Internet coupon, and not argue with the cashier. We were in a line recently at a big chain restaurant and the couple in front of us had a (bogus?) coupon. Even after the cashier called the manager they weren't satisfied with the rejection and wanted to call the company's HQ before we were finally able to pay.

When I've had non-accepted coupons in stores, it's usually my fault for incorrect size or expiration date or something, and I would probably not buy the item at that moment, but figure it out on my own time after the customers behind me are served.

Thanks for a great blog. Even though I moved from the Triangle to Washington (the state) a few years ago, I still read the N&O and your posts.

It is not surprising but still upsetting that coupon fraud is on the rise. But with the economy still slow and more people exploring the use of coupons, I suppose it's predicatable.

CNN Money had an interesting story on the rise in coupon fraud recently. I encourage you all to do the right thing and not engage in fraudulent activity. While there are lots of coupons for free items that are legit like the Uncle Ben's rice pouch coupon two weeks ago, remember that if it seems fishy, it very well may be. Here's a post with some basic guidelines on spotting fakes.
