I really don't think there is much to investigate. This whole thing was probably some type of automobile sales gimmick. I'm figuring it was one of those deals like a free weekend at Myrtle Beach if you will take a tour of a timeshare condo. This was probably the same type deal to get people to visit Red Springs.

If they offered me a free car to visit Red Springs, I'm not sure I would go. It'd have to be a mighty fine ride.

things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmm This is the guy who along with his son McQueen flew the governor around alot on their private plane. McQueen was also appointed to the UNC Board of Trustees?? Or something like that.

DOT board member Campbell resigns

By Paul Woolverton
Staff writer
ADVERTISEMENT

Campbell
RALEIGH — The Cape Fear region’s representative on the state Transportation Board has resigned nearly two years before the end of his term.

Mac Campbell, who represented Division 6, said he decided to spend more time with his family and his businesses, Campbell Oil & Gas Co. and Minuteman Food Marts in Elizabethtown.

He said his departure has nothing to do with the investigation of former Gov. Mike Easley, who appointed Campbell eight years ago. Campbell and his sons have been named in a published report alleging violations of state ethics laws in their political relationships with Easley. The former governor appears now to be under a federal investigation.

“I’ve had a good eight years,” Campbell said Wednesday. “I just felt like it was the right time to go.”

But he wouldn’t say whether federal investigators have contacted him or his sons, McQueen Campbell and Brian Campbell.

“I really am not at liberty to say,” Mac Campbell said.

The N&O needs to investigate the whole bunch that surrounded Mike Easley. They should start with Basnight, then proceed with Tony Rand, and certainly they would have a field day with R.C. Soles, Jr.

By the way, the N&O should check into why Senator Soles has funded the building of a home on March Street in Tabor City for a 16 year old boy who has never worked a day in his life but can pull out a wad of money that could choke a horse.

I'd like to know why the senator thinks he is helping this young boy along with other older boys by dishing out money like candy.

I guess the senator can do with his money what he wants as long as it's legal and no strings are attached, but I believe there are some mighty long strings on these puppets of the senators that he won't cut as long as he's not caught. This is where the N&O should start investigating the matter. It would be a challenge and some brick walls would have to be knocked down, but it would be interesting for the whole state of North Carolina to see how a "corrupt, powerful" senator operates. And has done it for years. This story would make ColCor pale.

Mike Easley should have had to pay car insurance on his teenage son like the rest. But, oops, I forgot. Easley didn't pay the car insurance, did he? How convenient to milk the poor state of North Carolina and then pretend to care about its citizens and the hardships they face to make ends meet. How dare Easley and his missus to take bread from the mouths of many babes who can't defend themselves. All they have done is just make the babes further into debt whenever they become teenagers like Easley, Jr. Wonder how these babes can afford the insurance by then? I don't see how these Easleys and their corrupt friends can sleep at night. I would be finding me an altar somewhere and getting things right with the One who matters most.

Sounds as if you know where the dirt is on Bev Perdue. She sure has a bunch to make look good, although you left one of them out. You didn't mention Senator R.C. Soles, Jr. His law partner just got appointed to a judgeship by Your Honor Perdue. Isn't that just so convenient for the senator? He has a DA in his hip pocket, a former partner as a judge and his partner's husband as a district court trial court coordinator. Boy, he certainly knows which cases will be tried under any judge he chooses and he keeps his hand on the pulse of the district while he's in Raleigh making laws that are convenient for his "lawless bunch of boys" that never get stiff sentences no matter what they do.

Sounds like I know the dirt on Senator Soles, right? Yep, I do. The voters in North Carolina need to keep a clear head on election day the next time around and get rid of this bunch of hoodlums. North Carolina will never prosper as long as any of this bunch is in leadership

If Bleeker paid the taxes and Easley is saying it was used for the campaign then it was an illegal corporate contribution. Come on N&O - you know that.

We always knew Easley was an inept lazy Governor but I can't believe he was corrupt too. Instead of going to the office and working to recruit jobs and help the people of the state, he spent most of his time playing basketball with the inmates at the Governor's mansion or 5 day weekends in Southport.

It's no wonder North Carolina has lost more jobs per capita in the past six months than any other state in the nation even though we have one of the best university and public school systems.

And I can't believe NC State would keep someone on the payroll who is in legal jeopardy.

Great job Frank Holding and the N&O!

Between this scandal and the feds looking into the Easley purchase of coastal property, hopefully the whole family will go to jail. Easley is the master of excuses, especially when his hand has been caught in the cookie jar. He was without scruples as Attorney General and was unfit to be governor. Bushy, Jr. will be known as the most stupid President this nation has ever had and Easley's legacy will be that of being the most crooked administration this state has known in modern times.

What be the problem man? You be see'n how Chairman Obama bowed to the massa who funded his campaign din't chu? Well why you be so worried about a Democrat who is out of Office. You be knowin' de news people knew about this as long as the easy man was in office they just didn't want to compromise the Democrats. Ah cain't wait until perdue and Chairman Obie are out of office and see what kind of dirt they gonna publish. They will probably concentrate on the govermor's excessive use of the State Jet to visit her sone in DC under the pretense of consulting with Chairman Obie! What is wrong with a sitting Governor (especially a Democrat) from gtaking a little bakshish? Especially when ut is a really left wing kinda guy like Easley is??

It dosen't make a whole lot of difference what Easley, Black, Rand, etc have done or how much they have scammed and stolen. Bev Perdue will make them all look like choir boys before her term is done. Mark my words. I KNOW Beverly Marlene Moore. I KNOW her. I KNEW her. Grundy, VA HS, class of '64. Nobody TOLD me anything. I didn't have to READ anything. I LIVED IT. And the wound will never heal.

rjohns, what planet do you hail from?
dealers don't give cars away, but that's certainly what this guy did until he was caught by the N&O. Gov. Easley's son and/or campaign (depending on which version of the stories given by the Governor and his minions) drove this car for five years without paying a dime. The only reason they paid up was when they got called on it. That's some negotiating!
you don't give something for nothing. So the point is what did Bleecker get in return for what was a gift until about a month ago when Easley finally paid up.

Rjohns: You've never been the governor and I doubt you'd have any reason to lie about your car deals. State employees are barred from such dealings.

BTW, pray tell which dealer pays the DOC & DMV fees and multi year taxes for you? I may buy my next car from him!

Wake up and smell the sewage eminating from the Gov's mansion.

This seems a little alarmist. When we negotiate our automobile purchase do we not negotiate for everything we can get? We sure do!

I have had my car tax paid a few times over the years by the dealer as well as those outrageous documentation and tag fees.

I fail to see the relevence!

The Bleecker Olds Buick GMC dealership paid property taxes for 2003, 2004 and 2005 on the SUV that the campaign of Gov. Mike Easley says it was using then.

New records from the Robeson County tax office show the taxes were paid each year. The combined total was $459.81, Andy Curliss reports.

The additional information means that the Bleecker dealership, which is based in Red Springs, had spent at least $18,184 on the vehicle — a figure that does not include insurance for six years the dealership also paid.

This month, after reports of the car became public, Easley or his campaign paid the Bleecker dealership $13,595 on the vehicle, an amount that is for the use of the car during the campaign and then Easley's subsequent purchase of it this month.

A campaign lawyer for Easley, John Wallace, has refused to discuss the issue. Attempts to reach Easley have been unsuccessful.

So it remains unclear why Easley hasn't paid for the full value of the vehicle.

It's also unclear who from the Easley campaign used the vehicle in 2003, 2004 and the first part of 2005. Easley won re-election in November 2004.

The State Board of Elections is looking into the matter.
