The daughter of Rep. Alma Adams said she learned about the scholarship from a Web site.

Jeanelle Lindsay began studying for a master's of education with a concentration in reading at UNC-Greensboro last year.

She said she found out about the N.C. Legislative Black Caucus Foundation scholarship while looking for grants and other financial aid. She said her mother never mentioned it to her.

"I would have asked about it a long time ago," she said.

Lindsay, 33, said the scholarship required a high grade-point average, and she had a 4.0. After she was awarded the scholarship, a $1,000 check was sent to the college's financial aid office.

Though she's still studying for her degree, Lindsay got a job earlier this year. She said she paid the money back to the foundation so that it could go for another needy student.
