Young raises $180,000

David YoungDavid Young kicked off his campaign for state treasurer Tuesday.

The Buncombe County commissioner raised $181,250 at a fundraiser at the home of University of North Carolina Board of Governors member Adelaide Daniels Key.

Among those in attendance were state Reps. Bruce Goforth and Susan Fisher, former N.C. Secretary of Revenue Helen Powers and former Court of Appeals Judge Alan Thornburg.

"I'm humbled by the great showing of support from Asheville and Western North Carolina," Young said in a statement. "This is a great start."

He faces state Sen. Janet Cowell and Raleigh attorney Michael Weisel in the Democratic primary.

Re: Young raises $180,000

She is related to the Daniels family - former publisher of the N&O. She is the daughter of Jonathan Daniels, long time editor of the News and Observer.

From BlueMountainLiving.com:

Adelaide Daniels Key has made her mark all over this state, and in particular, Western North Carolina.

She’s part of the Raleigh News & Observer dynasty, which her grandfather founded.

While she grew up in Raleigh and lived most of her life in Macon County – changing lives there and even leading the building of a public library – she came to Asheville in 1987 following a divorce.

Before moving here, she ran her own gourmet gift shop and catering business in Franklin, called the Pantry Key. She is also the former owner of The Mountaineer Publishing Co. in Waynesville and has served in the past as director for the Raleigh News and Observer. Her goals with newspapers were to keep them community papers and focus on the good news happening in the area.

In 1990, after she sold her stock in the News and Observer and became a wealthy woman, she started the Adelaide Worth Daniels Foundation.

The N&O is published by the McClatchy Co. of Sacramento.
