Time off for good behavior

Good behavior could shorten former House Speaker Jim Black's 63-month prison sentence by 15 percent, or nine and a half months.

Black would likely want to serve his sentence in a federal prison camp, which have dormitories, no fences and relatively few guards, reports Joe Neff.

The closest one to Charlotte is on Maxwell Air Force Base near Montgomery, AL, where many of the inmates work on the base.

A closer option is the federal correctional institution at Butner, north of Durham. Security is higher there, with a double fence around the prison. Black would likely live in a dormitory and have an opportunity to work.
