Smith on Highway Trust Fund

Sen. Fred Smith thinks the Highway Trust Fund should build roads.

The Clayton Republican has called for the state to stop transferring money from the trust fund to the general fund for years, said his chief of staff, Jonathan Hill.

"He thinks the first thing we need to do is stop transferring the $172 million out of the Highway Trust Fund," Hill said. "If you're going to use the money, you should use it to build roads."

Smith thinks the money should be used to finance a $2 billion bond for roads and bridges.

Previously: Bill Graham, Beverly Perdue and Bob Orr say end the transfer; Richard Moore says not without finding alternative sources of revenue for the general fund.
