Smith on comm. college memo

Fred Smith opposes allowing illegal immigrants to study at state community colleges.

The Republican gubernatorial candidate told Dome that he does not support a decision by the top attorney for the state community college system to require schools to admit undocumented applicants.

"Community colleges get $4,000 per student per year," he said.

He said it was part of his broader concern about taxpayer-supported benefits going to illegal immigrants.

"The problem we have is that when you weaken the law in one area, you weaken it in every area," he said. "People can't pick and choose which laws they're going to follow and which laws they're not going to follow."
