Perdue's small business

A small business co-founded by Beverly Perdue was suspended in 2004 for failure to comply with the state Department of Revenue.

The lieutenant governor and her first husband, Gary, founded Quail Woods Village in New Bern in 1991, according to state records.

Though her role in the company is unclear, a press release from her gubernatorial campaign this evening noted that she is "50% owner of Quail Woods Village."

The company, which handles real estate development, has built homes and subdivisions in Craven County.

From May to October of 2004 — just as Perdue was wrapping up her re-election campaign — the company's license to do business was suspended by the Secretary of State's office for failure to comply with the Department of Revenue.

Perdue's campaign staffers and the company's registered agent were not available for comment tonight.

The story so far, after the jump.

—————

According to its 1992 annual report, Gary was secretary and Beverly was treasurer. The company's president was former state Rep. Gerald L. Anderson and vice president was Marie S. Anderson.

Around the time of the couple's 1994 divorce, Beverly Perdue stopped showing up on its annual reports, and in 1995, Gary Perdue ceased being the company's registered agent.

After Gary's death in 1997, Beverly again shows up as secretary in an annual report.

Reports for the next few years do not list all of the company's members, so her role at the time of the suspension is not clear.

On May 13, 2004, the company was suspended "for failure to comply with the Department of Revenue" according to a letter from the Secretary of State's office.

On Oct. 4, 2004, the company was reinstated, with a notice that its previous registered agent had resigned, according to a second form.

The company's 2006 annual report lists Perdue's son, Garrett, as secretary and Gerald Anderson as president.

But in response to a claim from state Treasurer Richard Moore's campaign that she may not have been a small business owner, her campaign staff noted the following in a statement this evening:

FACT: Bev Perdue is 50% owner of Quail Woods Village in New Bern, NC and part owner of BBA Development in Bonita Springs, FL.

Re: Perdue's small business

can someone let me know when it is about a week before the primary?

Re: Perdue's small business

It sure is fun reading the constant speculation on my sources, but I just looked this company up on the Secretary of State's Web site when I got the release from Perdue's campaign.

Thanks for reading,

RTB

Re: Perdue's small business

I thought I was going to the Under the Dome blog but it appears I landed on the Moore for Governor blog.

Seriously RTB, this has been fun for a while but isn't it time time to return to your journalistic roots and show some independence and judgement to filter what the campaign committees are spewing rather than giving them the imprimatur of the N&O? If not, at least have the decency of identifying Reiff and Ambrose as the real authors of your blog.
