Perdue defends record

Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue's campaign said she is strongly pro-choice.

In response to a widely circulated e-mail from a staffer for state Treasurer Richard Moore this morning, a spokesman for Perdue's gubernatorial campaign said her record is strong, Rob Christensen reports.

"It's just another desperate distortion from the same campaign that attacked the teachers last week,” said David Kochman, Perdue's spokesman. "Beverly Perdue is strongly pro-choice. That's why this year, she’s already been endorsed by the Women's Campaign Forum and in previous campaigns by groups such as NARAL."

"Her position has developed over the years just as Richard Moore's positions have on so many other issues," Kochman said. "But she is the pro-choice candidate in the race."

Moore has also been inconsistent. In a candidate survey by the same group, Project Vote Smart, when Moore was running for Congress in 1994, he said he would not support an increase in the minimum wage. He is now campaigning on increasing the mimimum wage.

Re: Perdue defends record

The 2006 North Carolina Democratic Party platform states: "We believe that a woman's decisions regarding pregnancy should be her own choice and not that of the government."

The 2004 US Democratic Party platform states abortions should be "safe, legal, and rare". This has been interpreted to mean that "a woman should have the ability to choose without government interference".

The Democratic platform sounds much like the position you advocate.

Contrast this with the 2007 North Carolina Republican party platform which states: "We urge the North Carolina General Assembly to pass state lwgislation prohibiting this [partial birth abortion] procedure". As you can see it is the Republican Party's position that government should involve itself in abortion decisions.

Re: Perdue defends record

Um I dont think any democrackkks follow the platform that abortion is NOT a function of government...let me know quickly if that is the case!

Re: Perdue defends record

OK, I am completly confused. Is Richard Moore saying he is more in favor of abortions than Beverly Purdue? Or is he just saying that Purdue is secretly opposed to abortions? Or that you can't be pro choice unless you use taxpayer money to fund abortions? Maybe the Moore camp should make it clear how much they would budget for state funded abortions if he became Governor. Does either candidate believe this is a winning issue in November?

To top this off FFC continues his ongoing repetitive rage about Democrats then advocates the Democratic platform on abortion. If that's not confusing nothing is. Ron Paul indeed. Is there an ignore function on this blog?

Re: Perdue defends record

Must you people continue your undying support for a democrat AGAIN in our once great state? Democrat control for decades has RUINED NC...

AND, Abortion is not an ISSUE NOR A FUNCTION of government. Get the government OUT of it! If you dont like abortion, BY GOD, DONT HAVE ONE!!!

STRIVE to be SMARTER than a democrackkk!!! They keep us ALL OPPRESSED!!!

WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!

Re: Perdue defends record

As a former co-chair of the Charlotte Friends of Planned Parenthood and with all due respect to Melissa Reed of NARAL, we still do not know Perdue's real abortion position. What she may have promised behind closed doors simply doesn't add up to her public record and statements. Don't take my word for it, below is what the Charlotte Observer wrote when Perdue lead the charge in 1995 to gut the state abortion fund. Saying you are pro-choice is not the same as acting pro-choice as an elected official.

"Sen. Beverly Perdue, a New Bern Democrat, has ambitions for higher office, but the 1995 session demonstrated she lets politics, not principle, govern her performance. A longtime supporter of abortion rights and of the state's fund that pays for abortions for poor women, Sen. Perdue this year saw to it that the fund was chopped to a bare minimum of $50,000. The reason? Not because she thought abortion funding was wrong, but because she thought continued support for it would cost the Democratic Party several seats in the Senate, and Republicans would take control. Many Democrats upset with Sen. Perdue's reasoning were left to wonder what difference that would make, if Democrats were acting like Republicans anyway." [Charlotte Observer, 8-7-95]

Re: Perdue defends record

As Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice NC, I have spoken to the Lt. Gov. at length about her pro-choice positions. I firmly believe that she is pro-choice and that her convictions have evolved and strengthened over her many years of public service. NARAL would not have had her as our keynote speaker at our annual event this past spring, if we hadn't believed that. NARAL NC has not endorsed in this race because we have two pro-choice candidates. What a great problem to have!

Ditto

My wife is deeply involved in pro-choice activism, fundraising and politics, and has been for 20 years. She's supporting Perdue without hesitation.

Re: Perdue defends record

As the one who sent out the email to the Charlotte Women's Political Caucus inviting our members to join the Women for Perdue effort, I am somewhat puzzled by the response of the Richard Moore Campaign. I would not be supporting Beverly if she were not strongly pro-choice. The Caucus is dedicated to electing pro-choice women to elected office and many of our members are already active in the Perdue campaign.
