No announcement yet

When the candidates for governor gather in Asheville for their first joint appearance on Saturday there will be one major figure missing — Democratic Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue.

Perdue decided to bypass the forum sponsored by the N.C. Bar Association at the Grove Park Inn. The reason, according to Perdue's folks, is that she is not offically a candidate, Rob Christensen reports.

"The lieutenant governor has not announced as a candidate for governor," said Marion Sullivan, a senior Perdue campaign advisor.

But, of course, Perdue has been traveling the state for months raising millions for her campaign.

More after the jump.

At a fundraiser in April in Wilson, Perdue was not coy about her candidacy.

"The polls, if you can believe them, give me a double digit lead in this race, and I've raised more money than any other candidate. This is the right time for my campaign, you can just feel it," Perdue said, according to the Wilson Daily Times.

The campaign of Democratic state Treasurer Richard Moore, criticized Perdue for missing the forum.

"Bev Perdue is doing every thing a candidate does, but one thing — actually telling voters why she wants to be governor,” said Jay Reiff, Moore’s chief political strategist. "Apparently you need to write a check to hear Bev’s stump speech, because she is sure not shy around people with checkbooks."

Moore and Republicans Bill Graham, Bob Orr and Fred Smith are scheduled to appear before the bar association.
