A proposal by U.S. Sen. Richard Burr to declare part of the New River scenic has run into trouble.
Virginia officials contend that a bill to add a 31-mile stretch to the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act could interfere with a proposed state prison, the Winston-Salem Journal reports.
And U.S. Sen. Jim Webb, a Virginia Democrat, argues it could undermine efforts by Independence, Va., and Sparta, N.C., to draw drinking water from the river.
Burr said he didn't contact Virginia officials about his bill beforehand.
"The only check I did in Virginia was to see if this was beneficial to the New River to have this designation," he said.
