MySpace backs down

MySpace will release a list of sex offenders on its site after all.

The popular social networking site had previously refused to give up the names of registered sex offenders it has removed since December, citing a federal privacy law.

But in a meeting with Attorney General Roy Cooper on Friday, it backed away from that claim.

"I guess they changed their mind," he said.

Cooper expects his office will receive the full list this afternoon. He said MySpace will release a similar list to any other state attorney general who requests it.

"Parents know better than anyone that we must keep barriers between predators and children," he said. "This information will help us do that."

Cooper said he will still push for a bill to ban sex offenders from using MySpace and other sites.
