Moore on Highway Trust Fund

Richard Moore says the Highway Trust Fund should be carefully handled.

In a brief statement, the state treasurer and Democratic gubernatorial nominee said that the annual transfer of $170 million from the trust fund to the general fund "should have never been written into law in the first place."

But he said pulling that money from the general fund — as suggested by Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue Monday — without identifying another source of revenue is "fiscally irresponsible."

"We do have great needs in transportation and it is imperative that they are met," he said. "We should first ask the question: are we getting the most out of our current spending on transportation?"

Previously: Perdue says she would end the transfer of money from the Highway Trust Fund.
