Moore attacks Perdue on Trust Fund

Beverly Perdue's take on the Highway Trust Fund is drawing fire.

In an interview Monday, the lieutenant governor said she thinks the state should stop transferring money from the Highway Trust Fund to the general fund.

Richard Moore, her rival for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, fired back with a Web-only video noting that Perdue co-sponsored the 1989 bill that mandates the transfer.

"What Beverly Perdue said yesterday is that the first thing she would do to fix transportation funding in North Carolina is undo her own legislation," wrote Moore's campaign staff on its blog.

Perdue's campaign said that was oversimplifying a complex topic.

"Richard Moore may think it's 1989, but it's 2007," said deputy campaign manager David Kochman. "The 1989 legislation was a necessary — and in fact landmark — bill that provided hundreds of millions of dollars in transportation funding."

He said Perdue is looking for a "long-term solution" to the state's transportation needs.

trying to have it both ways

Beverly Perdue is trying to have it both ways. She calls the legislation “landmark” today but said Monday that a major provision needs to be undone to fix transportation funding in North Carolina. If the transfer is such a bad idea, why did she support it in the first place? Why did she remain silent for the last 18 years as Senate appropriations chair and lieutenant governor? Does she want credit for the “landmark” legislation, or does she stand by her comment on Monday that the legislation was flawed and needs to be undone?
