Edwards: Give up SUVs

John Edwards said Americans should give up their SUVs.

At a forum held Tuesday by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union, the former North Carolina senator said that Americans should be asked to drive more fuel-efficient cars.

"I think Americans are actually willing to sacrifice," he said.

He said as president he would focus on energy conservation and institute a cap on carbon dioxide emissions. He was asked how he could call for sacrifice while living in a 28,000-squre-foot house.

He replied that he came from nothing and worked hard.

"I have no apologies whatsoever for what I've done with my life," he said. (AP)

Re: Edwards: Give up SUVs

He would NOT have stated such hooey if he had been in Detroit!

What an embarrassment to NC...we got us a pile of embarrassment in this state, dont we?...unbelieveable, and most are totally clueless about ALL the corruption here.

Strive to be smarter than a democrackkk!

Re: Edwards: Give up SUVs

What continues to surprise about John Edwards is his brazenness. Perhaps some of the people who own SUV's, and value them, also feel that they came from nothing and worked hard.

Re: Edwards: Give up SUVs

We have got to come up with a new word to describe Edwards. Hypocrite has been used so much that it has lost its meaning. However the most amazing thing is that some people are still buying his load of crap. This guy would embarrass Huey Long.

Re: Edwards: Give up SUVs

America is the only industrialized nation in the world to experience a decline in average miles per gallon over the past ten years and SUV's are the primary contributor for this national disgrace. SUV's are involved in about 3% of accidents but about 1/3 of traffic fatalities so America would be well served to get smart, get with it and help rather than hurt our environment.

Re: Edwards: Give up SUVs

I couldn't agree more with Sen. Edwards. I know that people like to sit up high in their SUVs, and I know that they want heavy vehicles to protect them in collisions. But if everyone drove small hybrid energy cars, we'd be just as safe or safer in case of collision, and we'd help to make some changes in terms of use of foreign oil as well as reducing toxic emissions that affect global warming and destruction of the ozone layer. Indeed, a Democrat president, with a Democratic Congress, should pass permanent tax credits for those who drive hybrid vehicles or energy efficient vehicles, and should impose excise taxes or value-added taxes on the sale of SUVs. If people want to drive them, then in a free society, they should be allowed to do so. But there is nothing wrong with making them pay for polluting the air and wasting finite petroleum resources through additional taxes. I've heard that some people got tax credits for buying Hummers because they qualify as farm vehicles. Tax policy has for too long favored the well to do; it's time for us to develop policies that continue to allow freedom of choice, but that favor energy efficiency and cleaner energy.
