A judge sentenced former House Speaker Jim Black today to a $1 million fine plus related costs on two state corruption charges.
If the fine has not been paid by December, the judge said he would consider additional prison time, reports Ryan Beckwith.
The judge said he had a chance to look through "the window of politics" today.
"The view from this window is rather unsavory," said Judge Donald Stephens.
He said he agreed with the federal judge's sentence on related charges, though he felt it was severe.
"The federal government is not the victim of this crime," he said. "the citizens of North Carolina -- each one of them -- is the victim of this crime."
