Don Beason has released a statement on his decision to quit.
His spokeswoman, Joyce Fitzpatrick, sent an e-mail to reporters this afternoon:
Late yesterday I contacted the Secretary of State informing her that I wish to resign as a registered lobbyist effective immediately. I want to provide my clients with the opportunity to make other arrangements for representation before the North Carolina General Assembly. I enjoyed my work and appreciate the opportunity I had to serve my clients. However, I feel this is the right thing for me to do.
It was signed "Donald R. Beason."

August 16, 2007 - 6:21am — Lady_LoveYears ago, then House co-speakers Black and Morgan were telling interest groups that they'd consider a group's legislative interests much more seriously if they hired Beason. Beason then lavished all sorts of 'good-will' benefits on the legislators, contributed to campaigns, and co-mingled funds.
In other words, a clever and unique quid pro quo arrangement--but still not exactly legal.
(And no wonder he was rated as one of the most effective.)
If his financial records, and those of the various groups and companies he represented they'd find out he was paid far more than $107k. Just one organizatio, the NC Film Commission, paid him $80k in a previous session.
Beason probably thinks that by resigning, the spotlight will no longer be on him. I hope the press and authorities continue to investigate.
And include his son, who was taught well.
