Advocacy group targets Hayes

Robin HayesAmericans United for Change is targeting U.S. Rep. Robin Hayes.

The Washington-based liberal advocacy group is joining other organizations in putting ads out to target the Concord Republican for his vote against expanding SCHIP, the State Children's Health Insurance Program, Barb Barrett reports.

The group isn’t targeting any of the other N.C. members who voted the same way, including Democrats Mike McIntyre and Bob Etheridge.

President Bush vetoed the bill, and Democratic leaders are trying to get House members to change their vote to override the veto.

Brad Woodhouse, president of Americans United, said he doesn't want to waste money and that McIntyre and Etheridge appear “unmovable” on the issue. Both oppose using an increase in the tobacco tax to pay for the expansion and say it would hurt the state’s economy.

More after the jump.

Hayes' spokeswoman said he's unmovable too.

But Woodhouse hopes otherwise, given that Hayes faces a tough re-election race next year. "I think we have a slim chance," he said.

Woodhouse knows a little about North Carolina’s tobacco culture. He's a former Raleigh resident and Etheridge's former tobacco staffer. He also doesn't think a call from an old staffer is going to change the mind of his former boss.

"I seriously doubt it," Woodhouse said.

$500 per year for health insurance?

Acme Snake Oil maybe!

Consider yourself lucky @ $2,000.00 for a healthy, no pre-existing condition child. Who knows what a "policy" would cost for a child with medical conditions, much less two children with medical conditions.

How does a reflective person continue to take you seriously when you dive down to this level of discourse?

Turn off Rush Limbaugh and listen to some news instead.

Re: Advocacy group targets Hayes

for 500 dollars a year they could buy a policy

Re: Advocacy group targets Hayes

This disgusting coordinated attack on that child has already been debunked. I can't see how it helps your credibility when you promote Atwater/Rove/Limbaugh political savagery.

From Think Progress:

Here are the facts that the right-wing distorted in order to attack young Graeme:

1) Graeme has a scholarship to a private school. The school costs $15K a year, but the family only pays $500 a year.

2) His sister Gemma attends another private school to help her with the brain injuries that occurred due to her accident. The school costs $23,000 a year, but the state pays the entire cost.

3) They bought their “lavish house” sixteen years ago for $55,000 at a time when the neighborhood was less than safe.

4) Last year, the Frosts made $45,000 combined. Over the past few years they have made no more than $50,000 combined.

5) The state of Maryland has found them eligible to participate in the CHIP program.

Re: Advocacy group targets Hayes

As State Director of Americans for Prosperity-North Carolina, I would like to offer the support of our thousands of grassroots members for Mike McIntyre, Bob Etheridge and Robin Hayes.

The Speaker of the House said that this was about middle class healthcare, not poor healthcare.

The Democratic response to Pres. Bush's radio address used a child who goes to a 20,000 private school and his parents live in a house worth 500,000.

people like that should get a new govt. welfare program.

Re: Advocacy group targets Hayes

Ryan,

Make sure you mention that Brad Woodhouse is the brother of Americans for Prosperity's NC Director, Dallas Woodhouse.

With those two on the polar opposites of the political spectrum, Thanksgiving at the Woodhouse's must be a spectacle.
