U.S. Rep. Walter Jones says President Bush commuted the sentence of the wrong guy.
Bush’s decision to commute the sentence of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, a former top aide to Vice President Dick Cheney, prompted Jones to fire off a letter asking Bush to pardon U.S. border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean, who have been imprisoned for their shooting of a Mexican drug smuggler, reports Rob Christensen.
"While you have spared Mr. Libby from serving even one day of his 'excessive' 30-month prision term, agents Ramos and Compean have already served 167 days of their 11 and 12-year prison sentences," writes Jones, a Republican from Farmville.
"By attempting to apprehend an illegal alien drug smuggler, these agents were enforcing our laws, not breaking them."
Correction: An earlier version of this post misstated one of the sentences.
